i don’t know what makes me proudest; discovering she can stuff, wondering how many beers she pounded, or seeing that demented look on her face. i guess…really, all three.
This is my first time on a blog – I’ve been wondering what all the talk was about. Craziness – and great pics! And btw, I respect the heck out of the Walmart business model
Tweeky- sweet pictures, speaking from one photog to two others! It looks like you guys are having an awesome time. And no way, no way that all 96.5 lbs of you broke that basketball hoop. Besides that point, that picture is amazing and it’s currently my wallpaper on my computer (both at home and the office). Mrs. V- if you’re reading this words cannot describe how much I miss you and our endless conversations. A discussion with you anytime soon would scratch me right where I itch. Your pea soup isn’t half bad either. Love Jay
hi jay,
great to hear from you, but sorry about that pesky itch….
i love that picture of emmy too; it captures something fine and essential about the girl. now if she’d just post a little more often so mommy doesn’t fret! (i need a glaring emoticon right here, but i don’t know how to do that.)
MomV- wow, that response just made my day! It was nice to hear from you and if my daughter was ever hanging from a basketball like that I’d be the proudest parent on the planet. Anyway, lets not turn this into a conversation because I know Emmy will think we’re attempting to steal her subcontinental thunder, if you will. (Typical Emmy). Emmy, seriously though keep up the good work- the site is amazing.
P.S. What’s up Holly? (Like I’d leave you out!)
For Nick and Emmy’s sake I sure hope the find some salsa, and I’m not talking about the condiment. I have a feeling Emmy’s muscle memory (not to be confused with muscle mammory) will lead her to some Salsa-ing.

some news from the states…well, rochester.

Hi guys! Thanks for all the comments this is fun! I guess I could bring bindis back for everyone (mom- bindis are those ornate little dots that Indian women stick to their foreheads), but there are better things too like scarves and jewelry and stationary…. but I mean if you guys just want bindis that’s cool too. Jay and Holls- there is no salsa here unfortunately- neither the condiment nor the haunting dance moves. Jeff, I wish I was there to spin-kick Paddy for you, but you will have to defend yourself this time.
I miss all of you guys almost as much as I miss bacon cheeseburgers. We will post more pics soon.
xoxo
I think I’d enjoy your momma and friends! What a story log – bindis, Lienie’s, basketball hoops, the works! Be safe, have fun and enjoy it all. xx momR
hi kate. congratulations on becoming a grandparent. how close do scott and steph live to you and dick? sorry we missed you in NYC; the timing wasn’t good for us, but we’ll make something happen after the kids get back. are you fretting? i’m a fretter.
martha
em- sorry to be a pest, but i was actually referring to the other bindi- you know, the 8 year old daughter of the recently deceased crocodile hunter (may he rest in peace)? i apologize for the confusion.
A little update on what you’re missing in graduate school: This semester we have ethics with Jim. In case you’re wondering what it’s like being taught ethics by a man who says things like “Yeah, my kid’s a re-tard!” I will tell you it’s pretty fab. Imagine Jim with not only 2 Asians and a Latina to pick on, but now we also have a girl who is deaf. It’s mortifying. Also mortifying: me criticizing a guy at Figlio’s who claimed to be married but wasn’t wearing a ring, only to find out that he’s MISSING HIS RING FINGER. Don’t ask how I noticed that he didn’t have a ring on, but somehow missed that he didn’t have a finger. Just thought I’d fill you in on life in the Minni Apple Eat lots of curry (like you have a choice).
blogs for our traveling friends are fun esp when i get to hear what mrs. v is up to! (i hope you’re not fretting too much, if you need to make yourself feel better feel free to cook me some thai food) em [and nick] i was just thinking that i hope while you are in diu that lots of people say adiu so you’re not sure if they are saying good bye or really just very content to be living in a place called diu. also dont worry about us selfish friends back here who all want bindis (human or not) we just want you to have fun (that was my subtle plea change from bindi to a scarf)

Hi Martha. Exciting days at our house. Scott and Stephanie are living with us. They moved to IA from NV the end of Sept. Scott started a new job; he’s just finished training; off this week to be a full-time dad. Stephanie will start a part-time job in March in the medical library of a hospital in Cedar Rapids. As I told Nick in an e-mail Sydney Pearson Rose is a beautiful little girl, and while it is true I am biased, you can be right and biased simultaneously (as Dick says, “You and Rush Limbaugh…” Ha!). This is a wonderful chapter in our lives. Great to have them back in the Midwest. I’m not a fretter – I’ve been known to obsess once or twice in my life… I talked with Nick a week or so ago and he sounded just wonderful. Aren’t their notes the best?! I love reading about their adventures while they are occuring. Kate
holly i do believe that human trafficking has been outlawed, so you should be ashamed of yourself. it’s bad enough that you blatantly beg for goodies from india.
monika i think i’m talking about fretting more than i’m actually fretting. one good thing about getting to be middle aged is that my memory is getting so lousy that i forget even to fret. i’m making thai food friday; want to come over? you can bring the boyfriend….
love mrsV
your pics are great and it looks like lots of fun. i’m so excited for you guys and secretly quite jealous .this blog makes it feel like you guys are right around the corner and not around the globe. life here is still pretty much the same. lucas is getting big, damien got a 96% on his math midterm (i didn’t know 3rd graders had midterms) and 100% on his most recent spelling test which included words such as earthquakes, continents, and tectonics, marion got a job, and i bought a wedding dress (not the one you saw before). the lack of excitement is draining.
i don’t know if you have ever seen the new show on nbc called heros but there is an indian actor who is a native of bangalore. it’s a amall world after all.
just got a text from emmy. they are in Nasik, (also spelled nashik) a wine-producing town about 185 km from mumbai/bombay. here’s a picture of Nasik from TrekEarth website:
i’m sure you’re listening to wonderful music abroad…but i just got the new arcade fire and its pretty good. No wait, its amazing.
momV- you want a copy? it hasn’t really been released yet, so you could be the most hip mom in town…or maybe joey would enjoy it. if so, email me your address…
and em, i promise to send you some tunes when you settle down…modest mouse, iron and wine, arcade fire, andrew bird, national, whew! big year in music.
hey em.. your email to the rats mentioned frequent bathroom trips.. how often do you get to shower? and has that one deodorant stick you two are sharing run out yet?
Hi!!!! I just spent the last hour looking at your pictures (so much better than studying.) They’re incredible. I hope you guys are having an amazing time, I miss you! Tell Nick I said hi, and I could have done without the bus/ bathroom story (j/k). Be careful!
Tweeky- I hope your travels are going well. The pictures are amazing- I hope you’re actually letting Nick take some. I just wanted to say what’s up. Poofie’s birthday was recently and I just wondered if she called and gave you the annual best friend speech? I sure hope so, even though it’s mainly my material. Funny story about sharing deoderant. Recently I was running late to work and forgot to apply some- needless to say it was noticeable when the joined forces of the heat being cranked at work and my wool sweater/hair-helmet combination came into full affect. So I went down to my friends desk- who happens to be a female- and I used her Secret. I’m not afraid to admit that it smelled wonderful and the commercials are accurate- it is strong enough for a man. Now I know what you’re thinking- am I really classified as a man? We can tackle the debate some other time, not over the public (pooblic) intranet. Anyway, I have to get back to work but check your gmail sometime soon and I’ll be sure to send you a profanity-laced email and tell you all about what’s going on. Be safe!! Love Jay
jay-
you are definitely a man, and your underarm aromas should have proven it by now.
jeff-
joey’s music came today. that was really nice of you. thanks!
emmy-
our flight home from florida got cancelled due to storms in chicago so we were forced to spend 2 extra days on vacation. we saw amazing tropical birds and gators at an audubon sanctuary, and had a great time in naples, a very posh beach town. not a bad outcome, all things considered.
i miss you dearie.
love mom
No, we did not ride an elephant. I’m sorry for all this elephant confusion… I actually have no idea why Steph thought that we rode an elephant. Maybe we inadvertantly implied this in one of our posts. We have seen many elephants, photographed a few elephants, smelled and even touched elephants… but no, we have not rode (ridden??! wtf) an elephant.
Hi Em! You are wonderful! A hand-written, posted letter! We love it. Am taking it everywhere for “show and tell.” Seeing Leslee tonight at a meeting and will share it with her. Sydney and Steph just came home from visiting Steph’s sister, Summer. Sydney is wearing a shirt that Scott and Nick wore. It’s a Superman shirt and it’s darling! She’s 2 months a day today. You mentioned baby t-shirts, etc. The clothes are so darling – can only imagine the treasures from the other side of the world. 79 deg. today. Hyacinths, daffodils and tulips are working their way up and out! xxo Kate
This is a highly confidential and personal message, so you’d better stop reading RIGHT NOW if you are not my niece, Emmy.
Emmy, I highly recommend that you marry Nick, because if you marry someone else you will, like me, end up with a mother-in-law who every few years or so giggles nervously, drops her voice and refers to the long trip you took with “that boyfriend of yours”, all the while clearly envying and living vicariously through you.
Hey I got your letter and it was HILARIOUS!!! I left you a voice mail on my ex-cell phone, so whenever you get a chance listen to it. Just in case I wanted to make sure I properly thanked you.
P.S. Let the record state that you never used toilet paper before this trip; so why would it matter that the host family doesn’t use it??
just FYI, last i heard they’d busted their phone charger, so they are without a cell phone these days. i’m hoping that changes soon; i’m not crazy about the out-of-touch thing. probably can’t get great reception in the malaysian jungle, anyhoo.
So I was shopping and looking at all the trendy, super cute dresses thinking, “Who on earth would look good in this???” And then I thought, “Oh, Emily V!” And I silently cursed you for your petite little bod that can pull off a dress that made me instantly look 7 months pregnant. And then I thought about how I miss you! In that order. Sorry. When do you come back to the U.S.? I’m still delusional and am continuing to hope that you’ll screw the east coast and move back to Minni. Sigh. Hope you’re having fun!!
True story!! Yesterday I’m walking downtown into work and I see this girl. Short hair, pale, skinny, skeleton hands. (I mean this all in a positive manner of course). So I’m like “that looks just like Emmy.” So I veer off my path and I try and get closer, all the while thinking to myself I’m a horrible friend for not knowing she’s back in Syracuse. Anyway, I get closer and it’s your spittin’ image, dressed exactly the same way. So I’m like “Emmy!” and the girl turns around it wasn’t you. So I’m like “Are you related to EM VIGZ?” And she replies “Sorry I’m late for work.” But I needed more info on this bizarro-Em Vigz, which prompted me to ask… “Work!? Whatever they’re paying you I’ll double it.”
Okay, the last part isn’t true but I had to do it. I got closer to her, and she was way too tall to be Emmy. But the resemblance was uncanny. Same face, same mannerisms… it was kinda creepy actually.
um, wasn’t the main point of this whole excursion to india to work some at job helping those less fortunate?? i feel like you’ve been traveling ever since you arrived… not very charitable of you.
momV- why doesn’t mr.V ever write anything? also, have you made any JERK chicken lately??
jay- when will we meet again? i’m in the mood for a little salsa-ing.. and maybe some death-defying elevator rides to the top of the empire state building. oh, and i
Yeah! Get Mr. V on this website and liven it up a little bit!! We all know internet-blogging has always been his Achilles heel. No pun Mr. V, I swear. Holly, I’d love to come to the city sometime and visit. But no matter what it will most likely be too close to dark to go to the top of the Empire State Building. Even if we did go Emmy wouldn’t let me take any pictures. I hope all is well!
hi holly! get jay to come to the city and salsa with you, then blog about it. that’d be great.
i don’t know why mr. v. doesn’t post anything.
when we spent our first summer apart in college, i probably wrote ten times as many letters as he did, and long ones. i yammered on about who knows what, whereas he seemed to only write to tell me something had happened.
is that a Y chromosome thing?
i haven’t done JERK lately, but tony JERKED some chicken on mothers day! it was delicious.
love mrs.v.
Mrs. V- that was probably the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time. Write some material for Mr. V and put it up on the website under the alias “TonyVigz”.
So, get this. Today I was reading an article by some guy at UC-Santa Barbara and I wanted to look him up to see his research background (okay way nerdy) and found myself at the UCSB School Psychology program homepage. And then I saw this link on the page that said, “Ranked #2 school psychology program in the US.” So I thought, “Hm, wonder where that ranking came from.” And do you know where???? The poster you presented at NASP last year!!!! About faculty publications. Ha. So slight misinterpretation of data, but you’re cited!!! So be proud Em
XOXO

Tweeky- sweet pictures, speaking from one photog to two others! It looks like you guys are having an awesome time. And no way, no way that all 96.5 lbs of you broke that basketball hoop. (Typical Emmy). hey jay! do you think they have salsa in india?
January 24, 2007 at 8:07 pm
For Nick and Emmy’s sake I sure hope the find some salsa, and I’m not talking about the condiment. I have a feeling Emmy’s muscle memory (not to be confused with muscle mammory) will lead her to some Salsa-ing.

Emmy, I highly recommend that you marry Nick, because if you marry someone else you will, like me, end up with a mother-in-law who every few years or so giggles nervously, drops her voice and refers to the long trip you took with “that boyfriend of yours”, all the while clearly envying and living vicariously through you.
xoxo

p.s. Speaking of envy, I’m feeling it, big time. What a blast!

Hey I got your letter and it was HILARIOUS!!! I left you a voice mail on my ex-cell phone, so whenever you get a chance listen to it. Just in case I wanted to make sure I properly thanked you.
P.S. Let the record state that you never used toilet paper before this trip; so why would it matter that the host family doesn’t use it??

hey jay,
just FYI, last i heard they’d busted their phone charger, so they are without a cell phone these days. i’m hoping that changes soon; i’m not crazy about the out-of-touch thing. probably can’t get great reception in the malaysian jungle, anyhoo.

Same face, same mannerisms… it was kinda creepy actually.

jay, it was me! thank you for noticing my hands! sorry i was in such a hurry, i had to get to work to therapize some stalker…

um, wasn’t the main point of this whole excursion to india to work some at job helping those less fortunate?? i feel like you’ve been traveling ever since you arrived… not very charitable of you.
momV- why doesn’t mr.V ever write anything? also, have you made any JERK chicken lately??

Yeah!
