Gujarati Thali

Gujarati Thali, originally uploaded by Subcontinental Drift.

Looks good, doesn’t it? This here is a Gujarati Thali. A Thali, at just about any restaurant here, is a sampler plate — a little breadish substance (chapati and rice) with some veg dishes and dal. All in all, the perfect choice for a hungry and cash-strapped traveller. This [...]

Unwanted Attention

Unwanted Attention, originally uploaded by Subcontinental Drift.

We (Nick, Emily, and friend Jason) were walking around Diu when these dudes approached us and asked us for a “photo? photo?”. It is not uncommon for this to happen; we have posed with Indian families for photos at many other tourist sites. The men’s true mission [...]

Girl in Window

IMG_0622, originally uploaded by Subcontinental Drift.

It’s kind of awkward taking pictures of local people, but there was no one else around when this girl stuck her head out the window of a hut in Diu. She didn’t seem to mind. Emily took the photograph- the strict division of genders in India makes it especially touchy [...]

Men on Motorbike

Men on Motorbike, originally uploaded by Subcontinental Drift.

We’re getting good at the sneaky snapshot — in this case catching joyous riders unawares. The method produces a lot of junk (half a leg, a mound of poo, desolate wall meeting crumbling sidewalk) but every once in a while you get one like this.

Sunrise, Pushkar

It’s Good To Have Land, originally uploaded by Subcontinental Drift.
Pushkar is a small, holy city nestled in the hills of Rajasthan, West-Central India. The lake (where Gandhi’s ashes were scattered) is ringed by countless (52, to be exact) Ghats. These are places where people bathe in the holy water. It’s also where “priests” extort tourists. [...]

Throw Another Log On The Fire!!!

Raise high your glass, one and all — Nick is now Uncle Nick. Sister-in-law Stephanie has given birth to a baby girl, my brother’s daughter, my niece, Sydney. To wit:

We’re happy as happy could be, here in India. We’re only lamenting the fact that it’ll be months until we can fawn over the new arrival. [...]

No picture, and less than 1,000 words

But it’ll have to diu.
We’re in the LAZY town of Diu, which floats off the southern coast of the state of Gujurat. We’ve been zipping around the island on a beat-up old motorbike that, being of Indian provenance, goes when it wants to. The cattle are friendly for the most part, but two different ones [...]

Sunset in Jaipur

Sunset in Jaipur, originally uploaded by Subcontinental Drift.

This is the view from the rooftop cafe at our hostel in Jaipur – an unexpected perk of splurging on a $7 room. Looking out at the city from here, you can see at least 20 kids at a time flying colorful paper kites from their rooftops.

Ninja in the market- Kuwait

Ninja in the market, originally uploaded by Subcontinental Drift.
I believe the real word for this garment is “burka”, but Sanel and Tareq call them ninja suits.

Spices in Kuwait

Spices in Kuwait, originally uploaded by Subcontinental Drift.

Spices at a market in Kuwait. That’s Saffron in the upper right, but I don’t know about the rest of them.
